How much does a small business website cost in Canada?

The short answer

Most Canadian small businesses are quoted $2,500–$8,000 up front for a custom-built site, plus $20–$60 a month for hosting and anywhere from $75–$150 an hour for changes afterwards. Monthly managed options start around $99/mo CAD with the build, hosting and updates included in the one fee.

Where the money actually goes

A typical quote covers three separate things: designing and building the pages, hosting them somewhere, and changing them later. Agencies usually price the first as a project, the second as a small monthly bill, and the third by the hour.

That's why a $3,000 website rarely stays a $3,000 website. Two years of small edits, a hosting renewal and a security fix or two often costs more than the original build.

Project price vs monthly fee

A project price is better if you want to own the files and hire whoever you like afterwards. A monthly fee is better if you'd rather never think about it — no build invoice, no hourly rates, no renewal dates.

If you compare the two, add up three years, not one. Include hosting, a domain, an SSL certificate, plugin or platform updates, and a realistic number of content changes.

Fair questions to ask before you pay anything

What's included in the price, and what's billed separately? How do I request a change, and what does it cost? Who hosts the site, and what happens if I leave? Is the price in Canadian dollars?

Any straight answer to those four is a good sign. A quote that avoids them usually gets more expensive later.
