Who owns my website content if someone else builds it?

The short answer

You should always own your domain name, your text, your photos and your Google Business Profile. Whether you own the build itself depends on the arrangement — a managed monthly service includes the platform and hosting rather than handing over files.

The three things to keep in your name

Your domain, registered to you with your own email on the account. Your Google Business Profile, with you as owner and your builder as a manager. Your original photos and text.

If a provider owns your domain or profile, leaving becomes a negotiation. This is the single most common trap.

Build files vs a managed service

A one-off project usually ends with files or an export you can take elsewhere, and you take on hosting and maintenance.

A managed monthly service works more like a phone plan: the site is built and run on the provider's own platform, and the fee covers hosting, changes and support. You keep your content and domain, so you can always be rebuilt elsewhere — you just don't inherit their platform.

Ask before you sign

Is the domain in my name? Am I the owner of my Business Profile? If I leave, what do I take with me, and how much notice do I need to give?
